Wandering into the Village of Walloon is like taking a step back in time.

The Village of Walloon first became a popular resort destination back in the late 1800s when the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad would bring people from the city to Northern Michigan. Families would spend summer long vacations enjoying the unlimited adventure that Northern Michigan had to offer. Hikes and horse rides, sailing and boating, playing in the natural streams, and watching the sunsets… vacations were never quite long enough for those who could feel the magic of the lake.
Today, the Village that once welcomed vacationers, is at last in a turnaround after many years of isolation. Charming rows of boutique shopping, eateries and the recent opening of the impressive Hotel Walloon has made the Village of Walloon a destination once more.

Hotel Walloon stands tall in the Village of Walloon with its bright green roof and whitewashed walls, proudly displaying wooden porch rockers identical to those sitting on the porch at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Step inside and one will see that Hotel Walloon is unparalleled in its quest for beauty, elegance, and refinement.

Upon entry you will see a European style front desk and concierge desk there to greet you, and to the left, a uniquely designed drawing room with bold fabrics, colors and an Italian glass chandelier complete the room to create the perfect atmosphere for a late afternoon read or pre-dinner cocktail. To the right, a massive field stone fireplace with a cozy fire to make you feel at home. Venture further into the hotel and you enter the hearth room where the lobby bar and handmade treats await exclusively for guests. The lovely brick paved patio runs right into the lake with an enclosed swim area and private dock for hotel guests.

Hotel Walloon is a one-of-a-kind boutique, luxury style hotel that encompasses a vintage elegance of days gone by, but with all the comforts of a modern world. The Hotel features 32 unique, elegant and comfortable guest rooms. Hotel Walloon has gained a reputation for being the perfect “home away from home” for guests to enjoy all the adventure Northern Michigan has to offer. Hotel Walloon looks forward to exceeding guest expectations and adhering to the highest standards of quality, hospitality and character in Northern Michigan.

Unlike any restaurant in Northern Michigan, Barrel Back, located next door to the Hotel, offers guests a unique “open air” dining experience. The outside of the restaurant is completely surrounded by glass garage doors, which can be opened up on a beautiful Northern Michigan day. Similar to the atmosphere, the food at Barrel Back is unmatched by other restaurants in the area. The wood fired rotisserie smoker, oven and grill create an intoxicating aroma of smoked chicken, brisket and wood fired pizzas throughout the Village and gives the food a one-of-a-kind flavor.

Built in 1891, the Walloon Lake Inn is a historic landmark known for exquisite food, extensive wine lists and waterfront dining. Guests at the Inn can enjoy a casual fine dining experience either inside the main dining room or outside on the patio overlooking picturesque Walloon Lake. The Walloon Lake Inn chef offers guests a creative and uncommon culinary experience, featuring fresh local ingredients and an inventive rotating menu.

In addition to unique restaurants and lodging, the Walloon Lake Village offers visitors a one-of-a-kind Northern Michigan shopping experience. During the summer months, the Village is home to around a dozen “Pop Up Shops”, giving Michigan-based artisans and retailers the opportunity to display their unique offerings to Northern Michigan visitors. At Tommy’s Michigan, the latest swim and beach wear is available for your day out on the lake. Tommy’s offers visitors gear for boating, wake surfing and water-skiing. Boards and boats are also available for rent and sale at Tommy’s and offerings include water sport lessons through the Ski and Wake School.

The steep drop offs carved out by glaciers and cool spring fed waters provide an outstanding location for various outdoor recreational activities year round. As one of Michigan’s cleanest lakes, Walloon Lake is the perfect setting for swimming, water sports and fishing.

The Village Green Park, located in the center of Walloon Village, is a bustling place of activity year round. Every winter the park is transformed into a skating rink for all to come skate and enjoy the beautiful scenery of frozen Walloon Lake. During the summer the park is full of family and friends playing Cornhole and other yard games while they await their table at Barrel Back. New this summer 2016, Hotel Walloon will be featuring boat-in movies in the park!

If you haven’t experienced Walloon Lake for yourself, now is the time! Come and let yourself participate in all the Village has to offer: Stay at Hotel Walloon, rent a boat from Tommy’s, shop till you drop, indulge in a culinary adventure and take in all the natural beauty of pristine Walloon Lake!
