Petoskey ranked among top towns for sportsmen
In addition to its ranking as one of the coolest small cities in the U.S., Petoskey, Michigan has just been ranked as one of the top towns for outdoor sports. The scale used by Outdoor Life Magazine ranked 200 towns according to hunting and fishing opportunities, as well as quality-of-life indicators. Petoskey ranked 80 on the list, which appears in the June/July 2009 special double issue of the magazine.
According to an article in the Petoskey News-Review, “The magazine considered factors such as the varieties of huntable and fishable species available, proximity to public access, trophy potential and friendliness of state gun laws to sportsmen…” Petoskey scored 7 out of 10 on each of these criteria, save for its rating of 5 on trophy potential.
“Outdoorsmen want world-class hunting and fishing, but like everyone else, they also want to have a high quality of life,” said Todd Smith, editor-in-chief of Outdoor Life. Given this interest, the magazine also used indicators like household income, housing values, the cost-of-living index, unemployment figures and availability of everyday amenities.
