
On Monday, January 11, 2009, the Russian Ballet performed Marius Petipa’s Sleeping Beauty, to a sold out and ecstatic crowd at the Harbor Springs Performing Arts Center (Just 20 minutes from Hearthside Grove). Complete with music by Tchaikovsky, it was an extravagant and grandiose affair, the likes of which requires a communal effort that includes quality venues, professional crews and cultural arts coordinators that Northern Michigan is particularly well-equipped to provide. The Russian Ballet, founded in the late 1980s during a period of artistic explosion in Russia, has expanded, in just over a decade, into one of the world’s most renowned groups. Today, under the direction of permanent artistic director Elena Radchenko, it continues in its focus on traditional Russian ballet performance while simultaneously fostering new, contemporary talent.
